Donations up for some nonprofits

LOGAN — Some Cache County nonprofit organizations say donations have increased in 2011 despite a still-sluggish economy and national data that suggest charitable contributions are in overall decline.

The Herald Journal of Logan reports two of the area’s largest organizations — the United Way and the Cache Humane Society — saw increases in donations over the past year.

United Way President Douglas Stephenson said the organization raised $200,000 this year. That is a 5 percent increase over contributions in 2010.

Humane Society President Mike Bishop said his organization saw a 34 percent increase in cash contributions. In addition, he says in-kind donations of food, supplies and equipment increased 102 percent.

A study from the Nonprofit Research Collaborative found 59 percent of nonprofits saw flat or reduced donation income in 2011.
