On the morning of April 30, Hill AFB volunteers were acknowledged by the Airmen and Family Readiness Center for their efforts this past year during the Volunteer Excellence Awards breakfast ceremony.

The AFRC's first Honorary Volunteer Excellence Award was presented to the family of Charles "Gunny" Baxter, who served in many veterans and retirees organizations as well as children and youth education programs. Accepting the award on Baxter's behalf was his brother, John Baxter.

The AFRC recognized the efforts of seven outstanding volunteers who were nominated for the 2007 Volunteer Excellence Award. The winner of this year's award was Sandy Crandell for her work as manager of the Hill AFB Airman's Attic, assisting the Enlisted Spouses Club, Key Spouse Organization, Salvation Army, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Domestic Violence Shelter and other community service agencies, as well as contributing her time to the "Hill Hero" deployment dolls project.

Other nominees included:

* Audrey Wilson -- organized basketball camps for young girls, managed volunteers for the MS Walk in Ogden, selected for the Special Olympics Sports Director position, and building homes in New Mexico for families through Habitat for Humanity

*Scott Combe -- Weber County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team volunteer, trainer for several organizations including ATV use and safety, as an EMT for Utah Parks first responders, back-country survival, and first aid and CPR to the Red Cross and Weber County Sheriff's Association.

* Kerry Miller -- founding member of the Rose Red Foundation helping American Veterans by providing assistance, support, shelter, guidance and knowledge.

* Robert Bost -- Commander of the Utah Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fire potential and damage assessor, volunteer for youth programs that promote personal development and aerospace education.

*Ann Maglio -- "Hill Hero" doll committee and Hill Spouses' Fitness Committee member, President for Hill Field Elementary and Youth Center parent advisory committees, Hill's Youth Vacation Bible Camp volunteer, youth soccer supporter, leader of Hill AFB's alcohol awareness/prevention initiative, and Ronald McDonald House volunteer.

*Maggie Corpe -- 388th Fighter Wing Round Up volunteer, North Layton Junior High and Adams Elementary schools volunteer, President of the Hill AFB Enlisted Club, Medical Clinic Advisory meetings spouse representative, and founder of the Belle of the Ball Formal Dress Loan Service.

Upon presenting the award to Crandell, 75th Air Base Wing Commander Col. Linda Medler extended her gratitude to all volunteers who have contributed their time to Hill AFB.

"This base does not function without volunteers," said Medler. "You are always a smiling face and you make Team Hill 'Team' Hill."
